13 HUGS, 2 children, 9 adults (1 husband, 3 customers at a gas station, 1 employee at Smith’s Nursery, 1 owner at Smith’s Nursery, 1 new friend, 1 grandmother, 1 neighborhood friend)
I admit it, I am not always in the mood for a hug. There, I said it. I am always happy when I do, but some days are tougher than others. Today was one of those days. (Hopefully if you received a hug from me you weren’t aware.) I went to run some errands and found myself forgetting (once again) boxes that I needed to return to Smith’s Nursery. I began to get annoyed and realized it was the perfect opportunity to try to change my thought process. Instead of wallowing in the misery like I wanted, I accepted that everything happens for a reason and I was probably about to get a hug that I wouldn’t have gotten if it weren’t for this delay in getting to my destination.
I didn’t get a hug, I got 3 hugs. On my way to the farm I needed gas. I planned on getting it later in the day, but found myself veering into the gas station anyway. I never get soda at a gas station, but they have one of those coolers outside that make it so easy even with children in the car to purchase one. (GENIUS) As I waited for the attendant to return to the register, a gentleman behind me struck up a conversation. We laughed (perhaps he was flirting a little?) and it was a nice way to pass the time rather than get aggravated waiting for the attendant. After I purchased my soda, I gave him a hug, then proceeded to hug 2 other women in line behind him. Hey, if you have to wait around anyway, why not hug? They both appreciated it. Then, I came to a last guy in line. He was avoiding my eyes. I asked him gently for a hug. He said, “No thanks, I don’t need one.” I wished him a good day and I truly hope it was for him.
I was thrilled to meet the other owner at Smith’s Nursery while picking up my weekly veggies and I gave her a hug. She was very grateful and said she really needed it. (I knew I would find one that did!) A young man was at the register and I made my way over for a hug when the owner says, “oh good, he is not a very touchy guy.” I convinced (attacked) him not once, but twice because he also helped bring my veggies to my truck for me. Yup, the day was definitely getting better.
Finally, I got my last 2 hugs at a birds of prey presentation at Cary Library. What a great way to end the day.
Please accept this blog as my virtual hug to you.
