19 HUGS, 9 children, 1 5-month old, 9 adults (1 husband, 1 grade school friend, 1 mail carrier, 6 neighborhood friends)
When I first started this journey I talked often about how important community is. I knew that hugs could help remind myself and others that we are all a part of a human community. What I didn’t understand then was that I would inevitably create my own hug community. A group of people who would be joined to me by my hugs. Regardless of whether they have felt my my physical touch or have just followed the blog, we are all now a part of one big hug community. Doesn’t that feel awesome?
This became clear today when I took a walk with my long time girlfriend around the neighborhood. I passed by my mail carrier who produced 3 pictures to share with me. 2 were of her children, 1 of her 1 week old niece. I became aware that she had them knowing there was a good possibility she would see me and she wanted to share her life with me. How special is that?
Later, we encountered numerous neighborhood friends. A few of which took the opportunity to stop their cars and either get out to hug me or roll down their window so they could get a Melinda hug. We were all friends before I began this hug journey but now we are all just a little bit closer. I mean, come on! We are all a part of this fantastic hug community. It even sounds almost like an exclusive club. And by exclusive I mean that anyone can join. And, I hope you all do.
Please accept this blog as my virtual hug to you.
