I think I may have gotten my favorite response yet from a new friend today. I was returning something at Toys R Us and well, it’s a little too much to try to contain 2 boys while waiting in line. As long as they were not destructive and were within sight, I allowed them some freedom to run around. I noticed a small older woman standing near my boys. It appeared she was corralling them any time they began to wander. She looked to be a grandmotherly age and I enjoyed watching the interaction between her and the boys. At one point she turned to let me know she was keeping an eye on them for me. When I finished returning my item I made my way over to this sweet woman. She had slightly broken english and I believe she may have been Portuguese. I thanked her for watching my children and gave her a hug. I didn’t ask because I knew I didn’t need to. She squeezed me so tight and next thing I knew I was privy to her whole life! She let me know that she had 5 children, 4 grandchildren and one granddaughter on the way next month. I congratulated her and amidst her exclamations of, “thank you my love” and “God bless you dear” I couldn’t help but feel the warmth of a grandmother’s love. I was privileged to watch the hug break a barrier that caused her to feel the need to remain reserved. As soon as that dam broke, the flood gates opened and out poured love. I am grateful to have been on the receiving end of that love.
Please accept this blog as my virtual hug to you.
