11 HUGS, 2 children, 9 adults (1 husband, 1 mother in law, 7 new friends in Garner, NC)
Garner, NC is the town that Scotty McCreery sings about in his new song, Water Tower Town. (he sang it on Idol this past week) This is his hometown and is a stone’s throw from my home in Raleigh. He has always talked so highly of his hometown and what an amazing place it is to live. I have shopped at some of the bigger stores, but have not had a lot of opportunity to get to know the town other than that.
Today I decided to deliver some of my flyers for the Smith’s Nursery Easter Egg Hunt and Hugs for Harper fundraiser around main street. I got the usual suspicious stares from the business owners especially as I was someone soliciting something. However, they all warmed some when they learned what my flyers were for. Then, and this was the most amazing part, when I asked for hugs, every single one of them beamed from ear to ear. Every one of them excitedly gave me the warmest strongest hugs I had yet to receive from new friends. (my code word for strangers) I understood. I understood why Scotty felt so strongly. I understood why he chose to go back to his high school and knew that he would be welcomed back with open arms after his instant celebrity status. I understood why he would choose to sing a song trying to convey to all of his fans how special the town her grew up in is. I get it. If you have the opportunity, you should visit. You would get it too.
Please accept this blog as my virtual hug to you.
